It's time to get squeaky!

The federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law on December 10, 2015. It reauthorizes the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).  Elements of the No Child Left Inside bill were blended with NCLB to create the new ESSA! That’s great news.

The Indiana Department of Education (DOE) is currently in the process of determining how the requirements of ESSA will translate into state education practice.  DOE is considering which state practices will evolve as a result of ESSA and which will remain the same.  With your help, Environmental Education (EE) will be one of the state practices that is strengthened.

It is now time to get squeaky and make sure our DOE includes EE as an indicator or assessment on their request for the funds.   Please go to the DOE website and give your opinion - http://www.doe.in.gov/essa. On this web page there is a speech bubble on the right side.  Click on it and let them know what you want.  Below is a sample letter you could use.

“We are faced with environmental challenges affecting everyday life: our families, our jobs, our communities and our health.  Solutions often require a sophisticated understanding of complex systems and the interdependencies of people and the natural environment.  Environmental education is key to giving people the understanding and skills needed to best address many of our most complex 21st century problems.  If we include environmental education into our classrooms, our students will have a better understanding of the interdependence of people and the natural environment.  In turn our students will be better equipped to serve all communities in the 21st century.  Environmental education also provides improved student engagement in lessons as well as teacher engagement.  The Indiana Environmental Literacy Guidelines, created by the Environmental Education Association of Indiana (EEAI),  provides a framework to include Environmental Education  in the classrooms across the state.  Please include this in the ESSA request.”

Also please share this with other groups who understand how important EE is in the development of our future citizens .
